QUESTION: There is a rumor in our family that one of the male elders in our family was a military deserter. I don't know if that is true, but I'd like to pursue it for our family records. He was born in 1917, so possibly it was somewhere between the mid-1930's to 40's... in the Midwest/Kansas. Someone said it was the Cavalry, but I find the Cavalry to have been much earlier in Kansas. Can anyone help?

I think the only thing that is public record as far as military are military discharge papers, which if I am not mistaken every county court house gives access to. But, the va office would be the best place to start. You should be able to find VA offices close to you by looking online. At least they can answer you questions better.

You know his social security number and full name? If so, write the Army Personnel Center in St. Louis, MO.

If he wasn't Army, then go to the VA website for info.

Probably not since it is not public record. You can try contacting the national archives which has the archives of military servicemen records...

Or try contacting the VA.

good luck with your quest.
