Do you have his discharge papers or his service number/separation number or a copy of his DD214?

Did you receive an American Flag?
A head stone from the government for his grave?
He is entitled to both.
Contact the funeral home that prepared his remains, as they should have enough info on his status at the time of his discharge to help point you in the right direction.

Check with these guys. When I signed up for social security I had to provide my 214 form and either lost it or never got a copy. It was from 30+ years ago and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get it but to my surprise they sent me a copy, nocharge in just a couple weeks.

I don’t know about requesting for your Dad’s records but I bet they can help you out:

Yes, forgot about the fire you may have problems, below is a estimation of the loss.

Army Personnel discharged November 1, 1912, to January 1, 1960 80%

Air Force Personnel discharged, September 25, 1947, to January 1, 1964

Start with your Congressman, send him/her a e-mail with the particulars and details.

There was a big fire some years ago in St. Louis at the DOD site, and it wiped out alot of the records of older vets.

It was prior to when they started keeping electronic back-ups.

Also contact the branch of the service he served in.
