Requesting Military Records Archives

Jonny K asked:

Almost 3 years ago i was honorably discharged medically after sustaining wounds while serving in the middle east. I wonder if there is any way i can rejoin the military now that i feel i have fully recovered. The only setbacks i question is that one, i was also diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder, and two, have been recieving disability since my release. I do however have an outstanding military record.
Anyone with any answers it would be much appreciated…

I ETS’d from the Military in 1986 (Army), I requested a copy of my medical records 2 years ago and I received a letter from where they’re supposed to be held (no they were not destroyed in the fire back in the early 80′s). But I received a letter indicating that they were lost. (that was it, no explaination or indication that they were trying to find them….nothing) And I haven’t been able to figure out how I can get someone to start looking for them. Any credible answers would be appreciated.

Allow me to elaborate. Back in 2002, when I was 21 years old, I was serving in the US Army. Although stressful at first, I was handling everything just fine until things started to fall apart back home. Obviously, with several traumatic events occurring back home, I started to fall apart, since I was still very young, and stationed far away from home. Like anyone else, I spoke with the post psychologist for advice. I kept seeing him and telling him how I felt, until I was finally given an Honorable discharge after 16 months of service. He was straight forward, and said that he didn’t think the Army life was right for me, because of my acute depression at the time (I never had a history of depression). I agreed and was discharged honorably. The problem is that I was discharged under AR 635-200, Para 5-13, where the narrative on the DD 214 is “Personality Disorder”. To make a long story short, I despise this narrative because not only is it grossly inaccurate, but completely false as well. Just because someone is suffering from depression and can’t cope with the rigid Army lifestyle as well, doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with them. These types of narratives cause people to prejudge you, because the first thing that comes to people’s minds when they hear “personality disorder” is crazy. I’m completely sane, and always have been. I don’t have a shred of depression or disciplinary problems, especially in the civilian world.

gordon asked:

I have my DD214 and other records from when I was Active. However I do not have any records of when I went into the (MO) National Guard. My question is….if I request my records from the National Personnel Records, will it include my Nation Guard records to or not? Do I have to go somewhere else for this?

So based on what everyone has told me, I’m allowed to join the military with a hair transplant scar. The scar is just asthetic and has no effect on my physical ability.

OK, so I figure getting a waiver is too precarious and also my doctor is anti-war. Which means he is not going to sign any medical waivers for joining the forces.
I have wanted to serve my country since I was a little kid (I wasn’t even born here, but I have known to thank the USA since I was five) and especially as a fighter pilot or an astronaut. My doctors said I was ADD (because that’s what they say you are when you say you want to be an astronaut) and then they put me on Speed for Kids.
Now I am in college, and I want to transfer to Embry-Riddle or Ohio State next year after I get my Associates’ Degree and my Private Pilot’s License (which will be beneficial for going to the first school) and take AFROTC or NROTC. I know my doctor probably isn’t going to like my decision, and he’s already told me that I’m pretty much screwed for life. He calls me psychotic, and he’s anti-war. He believes I am being suicidal because I want to serve my country.
I want to purge my records. But how?

Alright, I know entering the Military on False information is punishable by dis-honorable discharge. I want to join the Navy, but I fear if I ask about getting medical waviers, they will not even want to consider me.
So, the question is now, when you enlist, do they do a background check on your medical records? Or can you say nope, I am fine, and they won’t look?
